Mission

GSN’s mission is to connect scholars and others interested in Guatemala and to provide a forum for Guatemalan voices to be heard internationally.

The organization’s goals are to:

  • foster communication and share information among scholars and others whose research and practice centers on Guatemala;

  • amplify the reach of Guatemalan voices beyond the country’s borders, especially in discussions of Guatemala and the broader Latin American region;

  • and, support indigenous Maya intellectual and academic activity.

GSN was formed in 1982 as an outgrowth of the United States-based National Teach-In on Guatemala. That event, held in 1981, was organized in response to the genocidal violence that threatened the lives of so many Guatemalans.
